CRADOCK NEWS - Buhle Hlonela Goniwe (17), a learner at JA Calata Senior Secondary School in Lingeligle, Nxuba (Cradock), scored big at the district round of the Eskom Expo for young Scientists, held on 26 July.
Not only was he awarded a gold medal and several extra awards; he also received a Rhodes University bursary to the value of R64 000 to study at this institution in 2026.
In an interview with Graaff-Reinet Advertiser upon his return to Nxuba, Goniwe said he only heard about the Eskom Expo for young scientists and the competition in 2024.
"I registered in the Grahamstown region.
Unfortunately I didn't win the regional competition last year and I could only bring back a bronze medal.
But that was the start of a new personal journey for me. This year I entered the competition again and I was one of the four winners," said a happy Goniwe.
"I was awarded a gold medal and several extra awards and a Rhodes University R64 000 bursary. Now I am moving to the provincial stage of the project, where I will compete with others representing their provinces."
Goniwe's project focused on growing plants using no soil, but using organic nutrient-rich solutions instead.
Goniwe represented the whole Inxuba Yethemba Municipality district as well as his school.
