GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Along with so many other fundraisers, the annual Hike & Hobble for Hospice is going digital this year.
"The board of the Camdeboo Hospice has been placed under tremendous strain due to the unprecedented disaster of COVID-19 and is financially in a very precarious position," said Brian Hough, the chairman of the board.
The Hike & Hobble, which raises much-needed funds for the Camdeboo Hospice in Graaff-Reinet, is usually held in May of each year and takes the form of a one-day 50km hike from the top of Ouberg to Nieu-Bethesda.
Unfortunately, as a result of the national lockdown and its accompanying restrictions, the 2020 edition of this event could not be held.
"The forced cancellation of the 2020 Hike & Hobble had a devastating effect on our finances as it is our main source of income," said fundraiser Colleen Buckle. "We had hoped to raise R150 000 this year, so this was a huge blow," she added.
Now, facing the threat of closure, the organisers have decided to take the event online by turning it into an at-home challenge.
This will allow residents of Graaff-Reinet, and even those from further afield, to still participate in this wonderful event in support of the local hospice.
Anyone up to the challenge will be required to complete the 50km either by walking, cycling or running in August.
Do it in one day or do a couple of kilometres a day – it's up to you, just do it!
You can complete the distance either by walking around the neighbourhood, running on the farm or on a treadmill, just keep track of it and promote an awareness of the Camdeboo Hospice while doing so.
