GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - This past Saturday the garden at Reinet House was alive with conversation as participants set up tables for the Graaff-Reinet Museum's inaugural Heritage High Tea.
Museum Director Anziske Kayster explained that while the primary goal was to raise funds for essential maintenance of the historic museum precinct, the Board of Trustees also aimed to remind the community what lies behind the Cape Dutch facade of Reinet House.
Raising funds
Many local residents pass by the museum daily without taking the time to set foot inside, and this event was designed to invite Graaff-Reinetters to experience Reinet House firsthand.
Engaging the community
Kayster emphasised that heritage is the museum's greatest asset and that, when leveraged for a good cause, it can truly engage the community.
Given the museum's limited employees, the support of family, friends, neighbours and museum supporters is invaluable in hosting tables and selling tickets.
The 19 hostesses embraced the opportunity with enthusiasm, transforming the museum's garden into a setting of uniquely decorated, but also diverse tables against the striking backdrop of Reinet House.
Childhood memories
Guest speaker Almaré Fourie, well-known television personality and former owner of Pioneers Restaurant, delighted attendees with childhood memories and reflections on heritage and change over time.
Entertainment was provided by Archie Pienaar, Chere Williams, and Erin Geduld on the piano, while a historical quiz engaged the audience, with winners receiving lovely prizes.
Best dressed and heritage table
Best-dressed honours went to Ethné Hufkie, while Ansie Malherbe and Koelie Adams were awarded for their table that captured the heritage theme the best.
A highlight of the day was 'The Heritage Walk, The Heritage Talk', when garments from the museum's clothing archive were paraded for the enjoyment of the audience.
"We've received so much positive feedback," Kayster said.
She said that the museum is grateful for the public's support, especially the sponsors who provided invaluable resources and funding to make this first Heritage High Tea a memorable occasion.
Following numerous requests, Kayster promised that this will now become an annual event with a Christmas-themed tea also on the cards.
