GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - A well-known Graaff-Reinet businessman is in a stable but serious condition, after he was bitten by a Cape cobra yesterday afternoon (3 February).
Johan 'Gerrie' Germeshuizen was in his office at AF Van den Berg and Son, when he opened his desk’s drawer and found the snake lying inside. It bit him on his finger.
According to Germeshuizen's sister, Thelina Geater, Germeshuizen was rushed to the Midland Hospital immediately after the snake bite, where he was stabilized. From there, he was taken to Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth, where he arrived at 02.30 this morning.
Germeshuizen is currently on a respiratory support system.
Geater said this morning said they are in the process of transporting him to the PE Life Mercantile Hospital. According to Germeshuizen's doctors, the first 24 to 48 hours are critical.
