KAROO NEWS - The weekend's Disability Fun Walk was the first in the history of Graaff-Reinet and described as a breakthrough for local disabled people.
The NPOs, Singaphezulu Ngabeyesi and Hope For Education, joined hands to organise the event in which 70 people participated.
Four sport teams acted as ushers and assistants.
Mayor Willem Safers said the day was an eye-opener for many people and that the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality will from now on do more for the disabled people of Graaff-Reinet.
The theme was 'Disabled physically but not in spirit' and the Disability Fun Walk will now become an annual event.
Singaphezulu Ngabeyesi founder, Geraldine Moos and Project Manager, Laughton Hoffman, were the driving forces behind this inaugural event. They said that the day was for all the disabled residents of Graaff-Reinet, regardless of the nature of their disability. "As a community, we should create opportunities for the disabled citizens to also take part in community activities." They thanked everyone who assisted them. "Thank you to everyone who shared the day with us and to all the businesses who made donations. It shows there is unity in the community and we can only build from here."
Laszlo Maya, founder of the Maya Foundation and a SA Deaf Rugby player who hails from Graaff-Reinet, said the disabled should not let their impairments keep them behind in life. "The day was an absolute success and the tears of joy and appreciation showed us that this event touched hearts. Thank you messages have been pouring in from the participants."
The two NPO's would like to thank everyone who assisted them and who shared this day with them and all the businesses who made donations. They said it shows that there is unity in the community and they can only build on in from here. The event will from now on be hosted annually.
