GRAAFF-REINET NEWS AND VIDEO - The cause of the fire that destroyed the inside of a home in Bergendal, Graaff-Reinet on the evening of Wednesday 6 May, is still unknown.
The devastating incident took place on the corner of Liebenberg and Woeke Streets at around 8.30pm.
Isabel Verwey, the owner of the house, said she was busy in the kitchen making a sandwich when she heard a noise that resembled something falling.
Verwey went to her room to investigate and found the room on fire.
Verwey said the fire spread too fast for her to stop it. Verwey on 11 May said the cause of the fire is not known yet. The damage was also not calculated by Monday.
The fire brigade and police were on the scene within minutes. Together with the neighbours, they tried their best to extinguish the fire. They stopped the flames from burning down the entire house, but the inside was destroyed.
Verwey said it was unbelievable how fast the fire brigade, police and bystanders were on the scene to help to try to extinguish the fire.
Some valuables that could be saved from the fire.
"I lost all my things with sentimental value, along with the contents of the house. You can rebuild the house and buy other furniture, but you cannot replace the things with sentimental value," Verwey said.
Verwey's friends are helping her with accommodation. She was living alone in the house.
