EASTERN CAPE NEWS - The Eastern Cape will join the global community in observing World Alzheimer’s Day on 21 September, under this year’s theme: “Ask about dementia. Ask about Alzheimer’s.”
The initiative, led locally by the Association for Dementia and Alzheimer's of South Africa (Adasa) Eastern Cape, encourages individuals, families, caregivers and communities to engage in open conversations, seek understanding, and confront the stigma surrounding dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.
Heather Rauch, regional manager of Adasa Eastern Cape, emphasises the importance of asking questions, especially in South Africa, where families often navigate dementia with limited resources and support.
“Whether it’s recognising early symptoms, accessing care, or simply learning how to support a loved one, every question matters - memories matter,” she says.
“When we ask, we learn.
When we learn, we care better. And when we care, we restore dignity.”
Throughout September, Adasa Eastern Cape will host community dialogues, caregiver workshops, and awareness campaigns across the province.
These events aim to encourage open discussion about dementia and Alzheimer’s, promote early diagnosis and access to support services, reduce stigma, and provide practical tools and resources for families and caregivers.
Adasa invites media partners, healthcare professionals, educators, community leaders and businesses to help amplify this message. “Together, we can build a more informed, compassionate Eastern Cape - where no one walks the dementia journey alone,” Rauch says.
