GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Gender-based violence (GBV) recently showed a decrease in Graaff-Reinet.
On 14 April, Graaff-Reinet SAPS spokesperson, captain Bradley Rawlinson, confirmed that GBV remained high, but the police reported a slight decrease in Graaff-Reinet.
On 21 May, police minister Bheki Cele said nationally there was a decrease in domestic violence during lockdown. "If we compare the period 27 March to 21 May 2019 with the lockdown period of 27 March to 19 May 2020, there is a sharp decrease from 21 033 in 2019, to 6 651 cases of GBV during the lockdown," Cele said.
Rawlinson again confirmed another decrease in domestic and GBV cases for Graaff-Reinet, following Cele's announcemnt of a national decrease. Local reported cases were not released. Rawlinson also confirmed a decrease in other violent crimes, such as murder, attempted murder and assault.
