GRAAFF-REINET NEWS AND VIDEO - On Monday afternoon, 24 September, a fun Braai Day initiative was held at the Botanics Sports Grounds in Graaff-Reinet.
This event - the first of its kind to be held locally - challenged locals to bring their braai equipment to the local sports grounds on the public holiday, where they were supplied with a table and wood, and tasked with creating a heritage dish of their choice to put forth to a judge.
The brainchild of local Pieter Pienaar, the idea behind the event was to unite the community in a true South African culinary tradition, the braai.
By early afternoon, the fires were lit and it was time for the participants to put their cooking skills to the test, by either braaiing or making a potjiekos dish. According to Pienaar, even though attendance was not quite as high as he would have hoped, the day turned out to be a fun-filled afternoon for a few local families.
Pienaar is planning on hosting the event again next year and hopes that it will attract more interest in future.
