KAROO NEWS - Nqweba Secondary School was abuzz with the Writers Aspiring Workshop from 18 to 22 September.
The five-day event was presented by authors Niq Mhlongo from Chiawelo, Soweto; Mzuvukile Maqetuka from Graaff-Reinet; and Monde Nkasawe from East London.
Their shared goal was to inspire and empower local learners from the Nqweba Secondary School. A select group of twelve students earned their spots at the workshop, chosen for their impressive creative essay writing skills.
During the workshop, the initially hesitant participants underwent a remarkable transformation.
They discovered that writing is a craft accessible to anyone willing to express their emotions and experiences by addressing the essential questions: who, what, when, where, why, and how.
Additionally, the workshop provided valuable insights into development editing, copy-editing, and line-editing.
Leroy Melani, one of the enthusiastic participants, encapsulated the workshop's spirit: "Being a writer doesn't necessitate formal qualifications. It's about pursuing your passion – expressing yourself rather than impressing others."
As part of the initiative, two promising writers with the most imaginative and creative stories will receive the opportunity to have their first novels or short stories published.
To be considered, they must submit a fully developed story of approximately 3 500 words to the authors by 31 October.
The school principal, Zanovuyo Mdingi, affirmed his support for the commendable endeavour, emphasising the school's commitment to assisting participants in gaining computer skills and writing proficiency.
Maqetuka, a native of Graaff-Reinet and a renowned author and photographer, shared his motivation for choosing Graaff-Reinet for this project, saying that charity begins at home.
This marks his inaugural venture into writing initiatives. To acknowledge their participation, all workshop attendees were presented with certificates of attendance, signifying the commencement of their literary journey.
