JANSENVILLE NEWS - A man accused of robbing Absa Bank in Jansenville 10 years ago, Ayanda Bokuva (29), appeared in the Gqeberha Regional Court earlier today, 24 April.
Abscondment
After the robbery of an undisclosed amount of cash on 31 July 2015, an armed robbery case was opened and investigated by the Hawks.
An intensive investigation led to the tracing and ultimate arrest of two suspects in 2022.
They were later released on bail and made numerous court appearances. Both were convicted. His co-accused was sentenced to 10 years direct imprisonment, but Bokuva never turned up for his court appearance in 2023.
Intensive investigation
The court issued a warrant of arrest for Bokuva and the police launched a manhunt, but he was not found.
After rigorous investigation by the Hawks, he was re-arrested by the Gqeberha Hawks' Serious Organised Crime Investigation on 23 April this year on charges of robbery with aggravation and possession of an unlicensed firearm pertaining to his original arrest.
He was driving a Volkswagen Polo at Kabega Park in Gqeberha when he was re-arrested and was found to be in possession of several cellphones, as well as another vehicle, a white Toyota Tazz. Various documents were also seized.
The matter was remanded to tomorrow, 25 April, for formal bail application and he is remanded in custody.
The acting provincial head of the Hawks, Brigadier Romeo Fredrick Petrus, commended the investigating team for re-apprehending the suspect.
