ABERDEEN NEWS - A case of housebreaking and theft was opened after the whole till, containing R1 000 in cash, was taken from a takeaway shop in Hope Street.
The owner had been visiting friends on the Sunday evening, and discovered the break-in on the morning of Monday, 4 March. There are no suspects at this stage of the investigation.
There was also a case of housebreaking and theft in Rafferty Street, Lotusville.
The owner of the house works in Graaff-Reinet and stays there during the week. He was called by the next door neighbours during the night of 6 March, as they had heard a noise in the house. On his return early in the morning, he found the front door had been forced open, and his flat screen television was missing.
The television has been recovered by the police, and the person who had it (who is not the one who stole it) will also be charged, for possession of stolen property.
The case is still under investigation to determine the suspect for housebreaking.
On Sunday, another flat screen television was taken, as well as meat, this time from a house in Skosana Street, Thembalesizwe. The back door of the house had been forced open. There are no suspects at this stage.
A case of theft was reported after cars at a scrapyard in Bell Street were stripped sometime over the last weekend.
The police are still waiting for a full list of the missing items.
Two chef’s knives, liquor, and a till cash drawer containing R1 000 were stolen from Georg Restaurant in Murray Street, sometime between 20:30 on Sunday and 16:00 on Monday.
The suspect, who has subsequently been arrested, gained access to the property by climbing over the wall, and then forced open doors to the main restaurant and the kitchen.
Investigating officer Cst Jean Jack advised the manager that someone should sleep at the property on Monday evening, as he suspected that the perpetrator would return.
This did indeed happen, and the suspect was found in the back garden again, but managed to escape over the wall. The police were called, and a 28 year old man, who lives in the town, was seen by police in the vicinity of the restaurant. When he was searched by the police, he was found to be in possession of one of the missing knives, and was arrested.
There were three cases of contravention of a protection order, and as can be seen from last week’s sentencing, this is a crime which is taken very seriously by police and the courts.
In the case reported on Thursday, 7 March, a Thembalesizwe resident assaulted his girlfriend. There were two cases from Lotusville on Friday, 8 March – in one, a man threatened his ex-girlfriend, and in the other, the suspect breached the order that he was not allowed on his ex-girlfriend’s property. All three suspects have been arrested, with the first two being remanded in custody.
The suspect in the last case has been released on a warning to appear in court.
