GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - In April the Graaff-Reinet Bird Club went on a most enjoyable outing to Excelsior, the farm of Rolie and Samantha Kroon.
On the Broederstroom road, near to Nardouwsberg, the farm offers hills, a poplar bush and dry lands yielding good sightings. Rolie told the club interesting facts about the history of the farm and about his maternal Murray side. He spoke about veld management and how it has improved over the years.
A total of 51 species were seen.
On 4 May the club visited Belmont, the farm of Mac and Jenny McFarlane. It extends from and includes Tandjiesberg down to the tar road. The members walked around the house, explored the lovely garden with its indigenous trees and the small lucerne lands near the sheds. The club then walked down the Swart River which had had a good run of water.
53 species were recorded.
Both outings ended with a braai brunch. At Excelsior the members enjoyed the garden and eco-pool and at Belmont the owners kindly made a fire at the picnic spot near the river.
The club is grateful to the farming community who always provide wonderful hospitality. Anyone interested in joining the club can contact the secretary, Judy Caryer, on 049 891 0353.
Full bird lists of species observed each month are available.
