GRAAFF-REINET, KAROO NEWS - October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is an annual campaign to increase awareness of the disease.
In support of this initiative, the ladies of the Spandau Secondary School in Graaff-Reinet will host their annual Pink Tea event on Thursday 24 October at 3pm in the Botanics Hall.
“We started raising funds for the local Cancer Association in 2012,” explained Ethne Hufkie, one of the organisers. “We held the functions at the school in the first few years, but then the venue became too small.”
The event hopes to raise funds for cancer sufferers and to put the spotlight on cancer awareness.
“All ladies from Graaff-Reinet and surrounding towns are invited to attend this special function which serves to celebrate the lives of breast cancer survivors while providing hope to those currently battling the disease,” said Hufkie.
A minimum donation of R50 per person is requested, and all funds will be donated to the Graaff-Reinet Cancer Association. Last year an amount of R13 000 was raised.
The success of this function depends largely on the generous donations of local businesses and private sponsors, to keep costs to a minimum. The organisers are very grateful to businesses who have already donated towards the event.
Anyone who would like to become involved can contact Virginia Christoffels on 083 359 2301 or Ethne Hufkie on 083 650 2556.
