GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - For the September meeting, 10 members of the Graaff-Reinet Bird Club visited Kendrew Estates, the farm of Garth and Linda Charles.
A walk around the homestead and outbuildings yielded good sightings of green wood-hoopoe, malachite sunbird and gabar goshawk, and an African fish eagle flew overhead.
After a break for tea and coffee, the host directed the group to a dam frequented by bird life, where members were rewarded with sightings of red-billed quelea, cape wagtail, three-banded plover and grey-backed sparrowlark.
At the hunters' lodge, dusky sunbird and Egyptian geese were seen. Other sunbirds spotted were the malachite and southern double-collared. A total of 47 species were seen on this dry and dusty landscape.
The club members were grateful to the Charles couple for their excellent hospitality.
The previous weekend, in the late afternoon, dedicated club member Leonie Fouché was thrilled to capture a magnificent spotted eagle-owl on camera in the Camdeboo National Park.
