KAROO NEWS - It's now less than a month until the 8th annual Hike and Hobble for Hospice Event on the weekend of 11 and 12 May, and most participants are well into their training routines.
The 50km route, from the top of the Ouberg along scenic farm roads through to Nieu-Bethesda, is a bird watchers' and photographers' paradise, and as there is no competitive element to the event, participants will hopefully have time to enjoy and appreciate their surroundings!
Water points will be strategically placed along the route, and back-up vehicles equipped with first aid items and 'encouragers' will ride up and down to make sure that everyone is in good spirits and good health.
Participants have the options of tackling the full distance in one day, or taking things at a more leisurely pace over both days. Anyone over the age of 17 may enter, walking, running or even cycling, with the only condition being that each participant must raise a minimum of R1000 in sponsorship money. Every cent of this money will be given to Camdeboo Hospice, to support their home-based palliative care team's work in the area.
Younger teenagers are also welcome, as long as they are in the care of a responsible adult.
The weekend walkers will be able to camp at Rietpoort Farm on the Saturday night, but this must be booked as soon as possible as space is limited. A delicious braai will be served to restore some energy at this halfway point, and the weary walkers will be able to share their experiences over the campfires. For those who prefer to sleep in town overnight, transport will be available to bring them back and to return them to Rietpoort early on Sunday morning to continue their mission for Hospice.
The final destination is the Nieu-Bethesda tennis club, where the participants' family members are welcome to join in the celebratory lunch.
Each participant will receive a t-shirt, cap and a goodie bag of munchies and other useful items. Hospice is extremely grateful to Pick n Pay Graff-Reinet, who are the main sponsors, for their generous support.
There is still time to enter and help make a difference to Hospice patients while enjoying a wonderful weekend of fun, fitness and fellowship.
