GRAAFF-REINET NEWS & VIDEO - Concerned residents attended an AGM meeting at the St James Church Hall on the evening of Wednesday, 5 June.
Local lawyer and do-gooder Derek Light inspired those in attendance by stating that the town’s residents need to take matters into their own hand with regards to the multiple municipal issues.
“We need to be involved. The collapse [of Graaff-Reinet] may be months away,” Light told the crowd.
His plan to save Graaff-Reinet and its surrounds is with the establishment of a forum that has economic development as its goal.
“It must be apolitical and representative of every group in our town. We need to run our town effectively by identifying service problems and offering skills or contributing financially,” he said. His vision is also to address issues, such as the draught or sewage systems, in advance.

Light approached the Graaff-Reinet Residents’ & Ratepayers’ Association and the Chamber of Commerce for support. These organisations are willing to help, but cannot finance projects.
“To be effective we need financial and skills resources,” Light added. “We need to give our organisations teeth.”
Member of Parliament and Graaff-Reinet local Samantha Graham-Maré (striped jersey) also attended the meeting.
