GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Desperate residents whose areas have been without a drop of water since 15 July, marched to the Dr Beyers Naude Local Municipality on Tuesday 18 July in a bid to be heard.
The march was later the day followed by a community meeting at the Alex Laing Hall in Kroonvale where, according to municipal spokesperson, Vuyisa Jantjies, people voiced their frustrations, but also gave suggestions as to how the situation should be addressed.
A municipal notice was sent out on 15 July to inform residents that urgent repairs needed to be done to the main water pump at the Nqweba Dam.
The affected areas were listed as Umasizakhe, Horsesoe, Kroonvale, Spandauville, Bergendal, Adendorp, Santafville, Wolwas and Asherville.
The notice caused a buzz on social media and the outcry grew when another notice was sent out the next morning stating that due to unforeseen circumstances the water interruption would be extended - no time limit was provided.
People complained bitterly about the lack of water and that no or insufficient water trucks were sent to stricken areas. It became apparent that there was a mechanical problem with the pump, and electricians were called in and a new part was ordered and replaced on the same day.
On Monday 17 July, another notice was issued by the municipality, stating: "The water-pump that was installed yesterday, 16 July, unfortunately seized today, 17 July, and needs to be removed from the water for repair work to be administered on it."
The main concern was the next sentence that stated that the service provider who performed the work over the weekend, would only be able to attend to the situation the following morning, Tuesday 18 July.
On Wednesday 19 July, the municipality issued a statement saying that the two 96 kw pumps have been taken to Gqeberha for refurbishment.
According to Jantjies, the lower affected areas are receiving a bit of water thanks to borehole pumps that can supply water to these areas. He says the main concern is the higher areas where consistent water supply has been a problem, although he says they are also receiving a bit of water from the borehole pumps.
Four water trucks are currently filling up tanks at schools and in the community. The trucks are also stopping at strategic points to fill up containers from residents.
Yet again, the municipality did not say when the water supply will be resumed.
