GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The replacement of domestic water meters in Graaff-Reinet is expected to be finalised on 27 June.
According to Edwardine Abader, the acting municipal spokesperson for the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality, all water meters older than 15 years are being replaced.
Abader on Monday 8 June said that, up to date, 2 715 meters have been replaced and 518 are still to be completed. The replacement of the meters started late January, without prior notice by the municipality. This left many residents baffled when contract workers pitched up at their homes and started replacing the meters.
At the time, Abader explained the replacement of meters follows an audit two years ago that found the existing meters faulty. Many complaints were lodged when people received the incorrect accounts.
Abader said the municipality identified meters that had reached their lifespan, and in some instances were resulting in faulty readings.
During a peaceful march to the municipal Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality on 27 February, approximately 200 Umasizakhe residents demanded improved consultation and better service delivery.
