What is the IGR?
At the IGR meetings, representatives from government departments report to our municipality about their projects in our municipal area.
The meeting is chaired by Mayor Deon de Vos. He began with a State of the Beyers Naudé Local Municipality (BNLM) address.
First up he commented on the recent Advertiser article which reported Minister Nene wanting the Eastern Cape government to take over 15 distressed municipalities, including BNLM.
The information which Minister Nene has on BNLM is what our officials have given him.
BNLM needs help and is asking for it. Amalgamation has imposed a horrific financial burden on BNLM. (Remember the 2015 GRRPA petition against amalgamation?) Councillor de Vos said he wished the government would see that its departments, which owe BNLM R12m, paid for municipal services. Debtors would have services cut and the municipality would begin naming and shaming debtors in the press. Businesses owe R13m and households R98m.
Councillors and municipal employees owe R900 000.
MANDELA DAY CLEAN-UP
Yes, BNLM will collaborate with GRRPA to clean up on Mandela Day.
Mayor de Vos guaranteed the involvement of all the BNLM councillors and the municipal services.
How will you, your organisation, your church, your school, your ward, your government department do your bit to make our towns proud?
