GRAAFF-REINET NEWS & VIDEO - The waste transfer station and recycle facility outside Graaff-Reinet was meant to lead the way in waste management in the Eastern Cape, but instead remains in disuse, with no indication from the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality (DBNLM) about when it will reopen.
Situated just outside town, en-route to Aberdeen, the transfer station became a real dump in 2018, when rubbish continued to pile up unattended.
Within two years the rotten pile of garbage have turned into a haven for thieves who strip buildings and steal anything that can be sold. With one security guard on-site and the gates at the entrance wide open, the road to the "transfer station" is an open invitation to criminals.
Under the name of the then Camdeboo Municipality, the station was built for general household waste and garden refuse. Building rubble, medical waste, petroleum, bituminous, animal carcasses and other hazardous waste should not be dumped at the facility.

The Advertiser has since February attempted to get comment from the municipality about their plans for the waste at the transfer station.
On Monday 23 March, Acting Spokesperson for the DBNLM, Edwardine Abader, said she is awaiting feedback and will comment as soon as she can.
