GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Vuyani Safe Haven in Graaff-Reinet recently celebrated its 20th year of existence, at the centre's AGM.
Vuyani, founded by Moira Strauss in 2000, is the only child and youth centre in the Dr Beyers Naudé Local municipal district. In its 20 years, it has become a safe haven for vulnerable, abused or severely neglected children.
At the AGM on 14 October, Vuyani Chairperson Elaine Stanley took a walk down memory lane with a presentation of the home over the years. She thanked all those who have helped to make Vuyani a safe place for children since 2000, with a special mention to Strauss, who was unable to attend. Strauss, who now lives in Calitzdorp, sent her well wished.
During the event, Vuyani's first caregiver, Lena Adams, was honoured for 20 years of service at the home. Adams is now a board member. Riana van der Ahee, marketer of Vuyani, was honoured for 10 years' service, while Jayde Odendaal, a representative from the KFC Add Hope Fund, received a certificate of appreciation for their support since 2015.
Vuyani's first boy, Donovan Buys, also attended, and was given a photo collage of his time at Vuyani, as recognition of his perseverance and resilience. Buys inspired Strauss to start the home all those years ago, when she found him sleeping in front of her shop in town.
Buys excelled at the home, where he said he discovered what 'love' meant for the first time. Today,
Buys is a local crafter, often seen with his wire creations and his beloved dog Stompie. On weekdays, he works as a technician at Graaff-Reinet Dentist@Health team.
Of course, coffee and cupcakes were also part of the birthday celebrations, and children of the home were treated to hamburgers, chips and juice from KFC at the Botanics Sport Fields.
