NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS - Driving into Pienaarsig in Nieu-Bethesda, on a winter's afternoon, one can't help but notice about 150 children of all ages, lining up outside the quaint pink and orange home of Sabina Horn, mugs and plates in hand.
The children are organised in rows according to age, with the little tots at the beginning of the line. In the back, the choir girls from Lettie de Klerk provide background songs.
Inside the yard, two large pots are flanked by Melissa Sengane, Francolene Brander and Renaldo Gaai, who all assist with the preparation and delegation of a huge pot of venison stew and another of fluffy samp. Nutritious oranges are also on the menu for the day. Horn mingles among the children, ensuring that each and every one has been served with a nutritious and hearty meal.
Fondly known as 'A'ntie Dompie' by the children, Horn says that she simply has a love for children. Her own children are now grown, and with four grandchildren who are her pride and joy, Horm has been cooking a weekly meal for Bethesda's children for a year.
Now, she says that she would like to extend this to a bi-weekly event to ensure that no child in the village goes hungry. She uses a percentage of her salary as a domestic worker and nanny to feed those in need, and collects donated toys and books to give to the children. Horn says that her kitchen door is always open to anyone in the village who is in need of a cup of coffee and a chat when they need it. There is a quote which says, "If serving is below you, leadership is beyond you." Horn's eyes, which reflect the compassion in her soul, and her desire to serve the children in the Pienaarsig community, paint her as a leader in this village.
