GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — A 15-year-old boy from Umasizakhe died on Tuesday afternoon, 20 March, when he drowned in the Nqweba Dam.
Non-swimmer Siphokahle Baba (15), a Grade 8 learner at Nqweba High, went to the dam with six friends, aged between 13 and 16 years old.
The other boys could all swim, and initially, Siphokahle sat at the side of the dam and watched his friends playing in the water.
He later decided to join them.
He was, however, not able to keep himself afloat, and drowned, despite the best efforts of his friends to rescue him.
The police were called to the scene at about 16:00 on Tuesday afternoon.
Close to 10:00 on Wednesday morning, search teams from Port Elizabeth and Cradock managed to retrieve the body from the dam.
