GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - On Friday evening, 1 March, Union High School launched their Centenary Wine, specially bottled in honour of the school's centennial celebrations, with a memorable tasting hosted by Fairview Estates.
'The Union' was transformed into an elegant and sophisticated tasting room for the occasion by Karin Marais and her team, with every detail, such as the beautiful placemats designed by Mieke Marais, carefully considered.
The tasting, which was exceptionally well attended by past and presents parents of the school, saw Karin's sister, Marlies Naudé, a wine expert at Fairview Estates, present a very informative tasting.
Naudé showcased a fascinating selection of wines in a 'blind tasting' in which she encouraged all those present to focus on the 'nose' of the diverse range of wines, providing lemon, pepper, green-pepper, nuts, cinnamon and other scent-filled ingredients with which to compare it.
The tasting also included a selection of Fairview cow and goat's milk cheeses and freshly baked artisanal bread.
A magnum bottle of 'Chakalaka' wine was auctioned off, adding to the evening's festivities, which raised the impressive amount of R1 919.
* Union's Centenary Wine is available for purchase at the school's front office at R100 a bottle or R600 a case.
