GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — Union High teachers and learners have been extremely busy on the cultural front this week.
A number of learners participated in the local talent show, ‘Stars of the Karoo’, held at the John Rupert Theatre.
This excellent event showcased the talent in our town, and Union is proud of the large number of dancers, musicians, poets and actors who made such an effort on top of their busy schedules, to take part.
Caitrin Spence, Jamie Jaftha and Yu Pei Rong displayed their musical talent on cello, violin and piano. Jason Beaumont, Luvo May, Bavu Harman, Ikhona Koeberg, Zintle Maki and Taylyn Miller sang a variety of songs. Dancers Carmen Beaumont, Donné Marais, Leah Marais, Kayla Bodenstein, Lulibo Pietersen, Brogan Koeberg and Laeticia Theron delighted the audience with both modern dance and ballet pieces.
Union is very proud of Ikhona Koeberg who held the show together as MC, and who could forget the Prep Schoolers - Sasha Cochrane and Aaaminah Steel’s excellent dialogue, ‘The big lie’?
‘Stars of the Karoo’ also gave our learners the opportunity to work with youngsters from other schools and the camaraderie between all participants was heartwarming. Special mention must be made of Yu Pei Rong who accompanied many of the singers, musicians and dancers with competence and style on the piano.
The Art club visited the Walter Battis exhibition at the Imbila Gallery. Walter Battis is probably one of the Eastern Cape’s most famous artists, and it was a privilege for the Art Club to see his original work. They also created the most beautiful ‘nature mandalas’ during a practical session.
The Eco-club is hard at work making ‘Eco-Bricks’.
The Grade 10 class has filled 26 bottles for this project that eco representatives Katherine Imrie, Liyema Sonjani and Erin ‘O Halloran are a passionate about. Erin filled 20 bottles on her own.
The Eco-Brick project is a brilliant solution to plastic pollution on our planet. An Ecobrick is a plastic 2 litre bottle packed solid with non-biological waste to make a reuseable building block that can be used to build amazing structures!
The Top Level Club also attended a training session on stargazing that was presented by Jurg Wagener, owner of Sterland Stargazing in Sutherland. From real stars in the firmament, to stars on the stage and in the classroom– Union has had a very busy week culturally.
