GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - During Union Preparatory School's recent Carols by Candlelight event, held in November last year, a special collection was taken among those present, in aid of the Laszlo Maya Foundation for the Deaf.
These funds were handed over to Laszlo Maya at the end of last week - Laszlo heads up this foundation.
Union's collection from 2017 was used to facilitate a Sign Language Workshop, and this year, Union's contribution will assist in acquiring a tablet with a special application to help Ava-Rose Adonis, who is completely deaf, to communicate through visual cues.
Laszlo Maya, an Old Unionite, lost his hearing when he was only 6-years-old, and had to receive a cochlear implant.
He finished his school career at Union High School in 2012, where he was Head Boy, and also matriculated with an A aggregate.
During his school career, Laszlo did not only excel academically, but also as a musician, and athlete as well as a rugby player.
The Maya Deaf Foundation's main objective, among others, is to provide financial assistance to underprivileged individuals especially the youth who wish to acquire cochlear implants and hearing aids.
This campaign and the establishment of the foundation led to Laszlo being nominated and announced as Mail and Guardian's Top 200 Young South Africans.
The Maya Deaf Foundation relies solely on donations and fundraising efforts to further their cause.
Union Prep School would like to thank their parents and friends for their generosity towards this very special cause.
