GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - On the weekend of 10 and 11 February, only 16 members of the Graaff-Reinet Bowling Club took part in the club's Mixed Pairs competition.
The eight sides were divided into two sections and played against each other on a round-robin basis. After two games on Saturday, Ivor Wakeford and Priscilla West, playing in section one, had virtually secured their passage to the final on four game points and + 30 shots.
In section two, Ferdi Serfontein and Jean Rosslee on 4+14 were the surprise leaders ahead of Robert Scott and Helene de Wet on 2+12. The Scott/de Wet duo could only hope that Eric Louw and Barbara van Zyl would defeat the Serfontein/Rosslee duo on Sunday and that they - the Scott/de Wet combination would have the better of their opponents, Fanie van der Merwe and Di Short.
The Louw/van Zyl pairing did their job, defeating the Serfontein/Rosslee couple by six shots, but Scott and his partner lost their game by three shots against van der Merwe and Short.
This meant that the final was between the Serfontein/Rosslee couple on 4+8 against the undefeated duo of Wakeford and West.
The final started off well for the new bowlers on the block, but once the Wakeford/West couple settled down the experience of the latter pairing came to the fore.
Wakeford and West defeated their opponents by 25 - 16 to deservedly win the Ronél Krige shield for the second time, having previously won the title in 2022.
