GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Two dachshunds, Tienkie (6) and Nick-Nak (5), were found dead at a home on Park Road, Graaff-Reinet, last week, presumably poisoned.
The owner of the dachshunds, Trudi Bezuidenhout, said she, her husband Stephen and their two daughters Amber and Chanté, left for a holiday in Plettenberg Bay on Tuesday 24 September and returned on Friday 27 September.
On Wednesday 25 September, her mother-in-law found Tienkie dead in the garden. Nick-Nack was presumed missing but was also found dead on Monday 30 September.
Their Great Dane Lexi (2) and the family's near-blind Catherine Jamie, are now all the family has left.
Two bottles filled with suspicious liquid were found in the vicinity. Local veterinarian Dr Natasha Burger from Camdeboo Veterinary Clinic said she could not determine what the fluid is. It is quite costly to test liquid for poison.
Hillary Chaplin from the Graaff-Reinet SPCA told the Advertiser that the trend of dogs and cats missing from homes in town is worrying. "They just disappear without a trace," she said.

SAPS Spokesperson Capt Bradley Rawlinson warned the community against three men who allegedly steal dogs in Graaff-Reinet. "These men are walking around with their dogs on leash, but are scouting for young dogs when it is clear that there are no security measures to secure these animals," Rawlinson said.
