GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The Graaff-Reinet SPCA recently had two distressing cases, after they found an abandoned puppy with severe mange, and a dog caught in a snare.
"We've had a harrowing past few days," SPCA Inspector Hillary Chaplin said on 11 May.
The Friday before, SPCA field officer Jean Pieterse responded to reports of an abandoned puppy in Kroonvale at about 8pm.
After some difficulty in the dark, Pieterse found the small black dog curled up in some bushes.
The puppy had severe mange, and could not be put up for adoption. A warm bed had been made for him at the SPCA, where he is currently recovering.
During the same week, a female dog was found caught in a snare in Kroonvale. According to Chaplin, the dog's leg had swelled up to three times its normal size. She was rushed to Camdeboo Veterinary Clinic, where a vet found that the dog's leg had died, possibly due to a lack of blood circulation.
"The vet was of the opinion that the injury was not new and that the dog had suffered for a few days before being found," Chaplin explained. "Due to the severity of her injury, the dog was humanely euthanised to relieve her severe suffering."
Chaplin added that an investigation is underway to discover who laid the snare.
Before going to press, Chaplin confirmed that the puppy had sadly died.
