GRAAFF-REINET NEWS — At around 17:20 on Saturday, January 13, the Fire Department of the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality received a call from the local police station's control room that an articulated truck was on fire roughly 8km from Graaff-Reinet on the N9 route to Middelburg.
Two fire engines were dispatched and arrived on the scene within 15 minutes.
Upon arrival, the fire department officials noted that only the tyres and the locked rear door were burning.
The fire was extinguished within 10 minutes.
One fire engine returned to the station while the other continued with cooling down the smouldering areas.
Later that evening, one of the other trucks from the company arrived at the fire station. The driver of this truck requested that the SAPS be contacted, stating that members of the Graaff-Reinet community had allegedly arrived at the scene and then continued to break the door of the truck to access the frozen goods inside. The police were contacted and officers were dispatched to the scene.
