GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - October has arrived and already trees in Graaff-Reinet are wrapped in the pink fabric that has become synonymous with Breast Cancer Awareness Month across South Africa.
The non-profit company Pink Trees for Pauline, which hopes to raise awareness and funds for cancer patients, was founded by Graaff-Reinet's very own Carol-Ann van Jaarsveld in 2012.
Van Jaarsveld started the project to honour her mother and grandmother, both named Pauline, whom she had lost to cancer. Their legacies live on through the Pink Trees project, as everyone is connected to their own "Pauline" and the fight against cancer.
Graaff-Reinet is already a sea of pink, with wrapped trees spotted on Bourke Street and Somerset Street.
Locals are invited to support the project by purchasing the pink fabric to decorate the trees and fences at their homes or businesses. Fabric is available at Our Yard on 50 Somerset Street, and costs R30 for 1,5 m.
All profit will be donated to the Graaff-Reinet Cancer Association to assist local cancer patients and their families.
As summer blooms, let's add our own splash of pink by supporting this worthy cause!
