EASTERN CAPE NEWS - The police in several Eastern Cape towns were kept busy getting illegal drugs off the street over the past week. Most of the drug busts have been as a result of leads from the public.
The Cookhouse Police arrested a man (47) in possession of stolen property and drugs following a tip-off on Wednesday 20 January.
They were informed that the residents of a house in Bongweni were dealing in drugs. Police Spokesperson, Captain Bradley Rawlinson, said on obtaining a search warrant from the Somerset East Magistrate's Court, the police conducted a search and seizure operation, confiscating Mandrax, tik, dagga and an undisclosed amount of cash.
The estimated value of the drugs is R2 350. Stolen property from a previous robbery was also confiscated.
In the second drug bust in Cookhouse in as many days, local police arrested a 31-year-old man in possession of drugs with an estimated street value of R51 000.
Following a lead on Thursday 21 January at 15:30, members of the Cookhouse Crime Prevention unit members set up a vehicle checkpoint on the N10. They stopped and searched a white Quantum taxi travelling in the direction of Cradock and found 350 Mandrax tablets and 100 grams of tik on the suspect.
Both men were set to appear in the Somerset East Magistrates Court.
The Somerset East Police arrested another two suspected drug dealers on Thursday in Aeroville in Somerset East.
Police Spokesperson, Captain Bradley Rawlinson, says the Somerset East Crime Prevention received a tip that drugs were being sold at two houses in Aeroville during an information-gathering operation conducted in the area.
132 Mandrax tablets with the street value of R7 000 were confiscated. The suspects, aged 29 and 31, were to appear in Somerset East Magistrates Court.

The Aberdeen Police arrested a 45-year-old man suspected of dealing in drugs at a house in Lotusville in the town on Saturday 23 January.
The police obtained a search warrant and on Saturday evening searched the house.
The police recovered 51 straws of tik and Mandrax with a street value of R5 475. They also recovered a substantial amount of cash.
The suspect was due to appear in the Aberdeen Magistrate's Court soon.
Aberdeen police recovered 51 straws containing tik, 2 full Mandrax tablets, 22 half tablets, 85 quarter tablets and cash.
