GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The most serious crime that took place in Graaff-Reinet last week was an attempted rape.
The incident took place on 29 August at 07:15 at AME Street, in Graaff-Reinet.
The complainant alleges that the suspect tried to force himself on her. The case is domestic related, and the suspect has not yet been arrested. The case is still under investigation.
Ostriches were taken from the grazing camp at Two Feathers farm in Adendorp between 07:45 on 27 August and 07:15 the next day. The ostriches, valued at R6 460, could not be found, and a case of stock theft has been opened.
A business burglary took place on 28 August between 21:30 and 23:00 at a shop in Lupin Street, Graaff-Reinet. According to the shop owner, his burglar bars to the shop were cut open to gain entrance, and cigarettes to the value of R3 000 were stolen.
The suspect is known but has not yet been arrested.
There was an attempted residential burglary at a house in North Street, between 16:00 on 28 August and 08:00 the next morning. When the complainant reported for work, she noticed that a window had been removed. Nothing was found to be missing.
There was a theft from the Urquhart Museum in Murray Street.
According to the complainant, he locked the gates at 17:00 on 27 August and everything was in order. When he arrived at work the following day, at about 07:30, he found that scaffolding frames were missing. The value of the scaffolding amounts to R5 000.
Another theft was reported from ABSA Bank in Church Street. A client drew a statement from her investment account and found that money to the value of R65 776.00 had been withdrawn from the account. The case is domestic-related, and the suspect is known to the complainant, but not yet arrested.
The third case of theft took place between 8 August and 11 August from a property in Caledon Street. According to the complainant, the suspect stole haberdashery items, an iron and ironing board, as well as a mirror to the value of R4 078. The suspect is known, but not yet arrested.
There were two cases opened of theft out of a motor vehicle, both also in Caledon Street. The first was in the early hours of the morning of 29 August. The complainant parked his truck, and everything was in order. The following day he noticed that three boxes of motor oil had been stolen, with a value of R3 500. There are no known suspects at this stage. The second incident took place on 30 August at 11:30 in Caledon Street. According to the complainant, his vehicle was parked at Caledon Street and he went into a shop. When he came back to his bakkie, he found that it has been broken into. Clothing and bottled water to the value of R4 000 had been stolen.
The final case of the week is one of robbery, with a weapon other than a firearm. This happened on 29 August at 14:10 at the hiking spot on the Jansenville road, opposite the N1 Construction company's premises.
The complainant was waiting for a lift when five men approached him and asked for his money. He gave them R20. They then threatened him with a knife while searching him for more money, and got away with R460 in total. One of the suspects is known to the victim and has been arrested.
All the above cases are still under active investigation.
