COOKHOUSE NEWS - Swift response by Crime Prevention members led to the arrest of a 29-year-old suspect and the recovery of a slaughtered sheep and the knives used to commit the crime.
It is alleged that on Thursday 2 September at about 23:00 members patrolled the railway line by foot after they received information that the suspect might use the railway line to move the sheep to avoid detection.
The members patrolled the railway line for kilometers before spotting the suspect at about 02:00 carrying a heavy object. When the suspect detected the presence of the police he dropped the sheep and tried to run away.
Members tracked the suspect in the bushes and found a sheep slaughtered with its intestines already removed. Two knives with blooded blades were also recovered from the suspect.
The suspect could not provide a justifiable reason for being in possession of the sheep. The estimated value of the sheep is R2 500.
The suspect was arrested on a charge of stock theft and is due to appear before Somerset-East Magistrates Court soon.
Cookhouse Station Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Ferreira, applauded all the members who were involved in the successful recovery of the slaughtered sheep and the arrest of the suspect.
