KAROO NEWS - The Slow Living Festival will be a collaboration with Slow Food International and their “Thank a farmer” campaign and Slow Food Karoo Convivium together with Wheatlands Sports Club on the long weekend of 21 to 24 March.
The organisers, Slow Food Karoo, have decided to create a “back to basics” festival, which is going to take place on the beautiful and well-known Karoo Farm, Wheatlands. This farm has a sports club, with four clay tennis courts, a cricket field and a fully functioning club house all still active and in regular use.
Families can camp around the cricket field and clubhouse, and all the social events will take place in this area. There will be sporting activities, and route maps for running, walking or cycling along various farm roads. Food will all be prepared and (mostly) braaied in a typical Karoo Style. Anyone wishing to book a campsite please email wheatlandssportsclub@gmail.com.
There will be artisanal style workshops and master classes in nearby farm kitchens, including cheese, bread, beer, biltong and droewors making workshops. For some fun, there will be a whip cracking competition for youngsters.
Head of the organising committee , Rose Wright, said “It is all about getting out as a family into the Great Karoo’s clean and clear air to stretch the legs and soak up the healthy feeling of farm life, spending energy in a beautiful, fun and holistic fashion”.
Local chefs and masters of food will be present to share their knowledge and expertise in various fields. Anyone wishing to contribute or participate can email tasteotkaroo@gmail.com.
The evenings will be made up of social gatherings and gentle music under the stars with fires and the full moon. An open mike session will be held for aspiring and accomplished musicians.
“We have planned the date around the time of the full moon so that the nights are bright and beautiful,” said Rose.
A market will be held on the Saturday, and anyone interested in having a stall, or wanting further information, can email tasteotkaroo@gmail.com.
