NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS - Nieu-Bethesda artist Dirkje Daling recently discovered a fascination for stars and ancient astronomy, which she beautifully captured in an exhibition that will open in this tranquil town on 21 December.
"After reading about the ancient meaning of some of the stars, I realized that there was a field that needed investigation," Daling told the Advertiser. I started doing some research, and found an amazing field of discoveries."
As an artist, Daling hoped to capture her findings in art. "After having a dream where I was shown the exquisite drawings and shapes in the heavens - which I could never reproduce - I was inspired to go ahead and show what I have been shown, even if it be in a very naive and humble way."
According to Daling, the emphasis of her latest work is on the concepts and truths behind the artworks.
"Take time to come and read what will be exhibited in correlation with the art, and your understanding of the stars will be challenged at the very least," she said.
All proceeds of the event will go to charity. People will have a choice of one of three organisations to which the money will be donated when buying a piece. Prices vary from R500 to R1500. These organisations are Sebina's soup kitchen, Camdeboo Sterilisation Initiative and Spitskop Jubilee Montessori School.
The exhibition will be opened by Kim Imrie on the 21 December at 6pm and will run until 2 January.
On Christmas Day, from 11am until noon and again from 7pm until 8pm, Daling will give a piano and vocal recital that accompanies the subject matter of the exhibition. All are welcome.
