GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The High Court in Makhanda has declared the School Governing Body (SGB) election of Union High School valid.
The election was conducted on 19 March but went south when a dispute was declared and submitted to the management of the school on 23 March. The dispute related to concerns around demographic representation.
The Daily Dispatch reported that Acting Judge Nomawabo Msizi awarded costs on a punitive scale against the Department of Education and certain individuals who mounted the challenge against the elected SGB.
Mariette Burger, the spokesperson for Union High School, indicated that the school has "no comment" on the High Court ruling.
It has since been brought to the attention of the Graaff-Reinet Advertiser that the newly elected SGB members may still not be announced since the High Court ruling is being challenged.
