GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Food parcels were handed out to beneficiaries in the 14 municipal wards of the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality. The handout took place from 20 to 24 April.
Together with the food parcels, the families also received toiletries and other essential products.
SASSA received money from national government, and ward committee members had to identify 36 beneficiaries within each municipal ward. Eventually, between 28 and 32 families in each ward received the parcels at the local SASSA offices within the municipal district.
The police and army kept an eye on the process, as well as enforcing social distancing.
Councillor Joyce Williams said it is not clear if the process will be repeated and if more beneficiaries will be identified.
Ward five councillor, Glenda Mackelina, made it clear that there are no politics involved in the process and she understands the need for food in communities.
