On 11 November 1918 at 11:00 GMT firing ceased on the Western Front in Europe. So destructive of life was that war that over 9.7 million military personnel and about 10 million civilians had died.
Even today, over 100 years later the remains of soldiers are still regularly being found and re-interred in war cemeteries. It was hoped that it would be the war to end all wars.
Even from our small town of Graaff- Reinet 40 young men never returned. Then the Second World War (1939 -1945) that cost the lives of members from all sectors of our community.
It was even more destructive than the first and has been followed by various smaller wars in both the 20th and 21st centuries of which the war in Ukraine is the most recent
On Sunday 13 November we shall be remembering those who gave their lives for their countries, no matter on what side, and at the same time praying for peace, both now and in the future.
We pray that all nations and leaders may henceforth realise the folly of armed conflict.
