KAROO NEWS - The United Movement of Rastafari (UMR) Royal Family recently hosted an event in Aberdeen to celebrate the 93rd Great Coronation of Emperor Haile Selassie who was crowned 'King of Kings' in 1930.
Rastafarians believe Haile Selassie to have been chosen by God and regard him as a messiah who will lead the people of Africa to freedom.
The date of his coronation is celebrated by believers throughout the world as one of the most sacred days of the Rastafarian calendar.
This year was the 26th year that the Great Coronation was celebrated under Umanyano after it was founded in 1992 by the UMR Royal Family to kindle the community’s interests and develop those willing to apply. Umanyano stands proudly as a community self-developmental program that honours unity within all diversity and in that way, it is a shining attribute to nation building.
It believes in the betterment of the individual through the unity of the community and to this end it encourages activities that adds to community living.
With a focus on youth development, it undertook all its activities in celebration of the Great Coronation under the philosophy of more sport, more music, less crime and while paving the way for the younger generation it also concentrated on preserving the past by teaching children's indigenous songs, dances, and games.
Umanyano is also intended to promote those ready for recognition by publicly crowning them for their worthiness.
