GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - The threat of a power supply interruption by Eskom has been hanging over the Dr Beyers Naudé Local Municipality for several months, with the most recent instance in early February being averted at the last minute after agreement was reached on a payment plan.
However, Eskom’s warning was stark: if the payment plan was not complied with, Eskom was prepared to interrupt the power supply as from 3 March, leaving many towns in the municipality in the dark.
On Monday, Eskom issued a statement that the interruption had been suspended, based on the planned intervention by the provincial government to assist struggling local municipalities with their electricity debt.
“Eskom will assess the forthcoming proposal from the provincial government and decide on the way forward,” said spokesperson Zama Mpondwana.
Fortunately for residents of Graaff-Reinet and Aberdeen, these towns would not be affected by a power supply interruption, as Eskom is dependent on the municipal infrastructure to service its direct customers.
The towns of Willowmore, Steytlerville, and Jansenville could, however, be without power for up to 14 hours per day if the power supply interruption is implemented.
