GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Many sentences were handed down in court this week, putting a number of convicted felons behind bars.
Two rape suspects were convicted to sentences of life imprisonment, one in Aberdeen and one in Graaff-Reinet.
Custodial sentences were also handed down in Graaff-Reinet for housebreaking and theft (12 months), common robbery (18 months) and culpable homicide (12 months imprisonment of which 6 months is suspended for 3 years).
Two suspects were sentenced for contravening protection orders. One suspect was given 12 months’ imprisonment and a second, 6 months’ imprisonment. For possession of dagga, a sentence of 20 days’ imprisonment, or a fine of R300, was issued.
Two others were given suspended sentences. For assault (aggravating), the sentence was 4 months’ imprisonment, suspended for 3 years. A fine of R3 000 or 3 months’ imprisonment, suspended for 3 years, was the sentence for possession of stolen goods.
