GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Residents from Graaff-Reinet and surrounds are invited to participate in the Graaff-Reinet Cancer Association's Roses of Hope for Cancer project on Friday 18 October.
On the day, which coincides with Breast Cancer Awareness Month, 2 000 artificial pink roses attached to sosatie sticks will be planted in the lawns of the Groot Kerk from 7am until 6pm by their purchasers.
The rose closest to a predetermined secret spot will win its owner R5 000.
"This project is truly going to be a beautiful one and the public is encouraged to order their roses as soon as possible to avoid disappointment," said project coordinator Margie Parkes.
Orders for roses, which have been sponsored by Merino Pharmacy, can be placed at Blue Magnolia Nursery, Merino Pharmacy or Brian Bands for R20 each.
According to Parkes, all roses are numbered and must be collected on the day at the church where they will be planted by their purchaser. For those out of town or unable to attend, a cancer survivor will plant the rose.
"There will be small cards available for those wishing to write the names of loved ones on who have gone through the cancer experience, which can then attached to their rose," Parkes added.
At 6pm the secret spot will be revealed and the winner of the prize announced. Thereafter participants may take their roses home, or leave them for the Graaff-Reinet Cancer Association to remove and reuse.
