NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS - Ken Taytasac, a kind-hearted resident from Graaff-Reinet, treated 18 residents of ACVV Huis van de Graaff to an exiting, fun-filled outing to Nieu-Bethesda on Saturday 18 May.
Ken ensured that the day was filled with good food and excursions to sites and venues in the historic town that many of the Huis van de Graaff residents had never seen or visited.
The group's first stop was the farm stall and restaurant, Tot Hier Toe, where they were welcomed warmly by Chrissie Swart, who had gone the extra mile for their visit.
The winning pumpkins of Riel Swart, who won the Pumpkin King 2017 and 2018 Pump-Polooza Giant pumpkin awards, greet guests at the Tot Hier Toe entrance, and the Huis van de Graaff visitors were in awe of their size - one weighs in at 220kg.
The beautiful lawn, thick hedge of pink chrysanthemums, strutting peacocks and many bird species added to the lovely ambiance on the stoep where the group enjoyed a variety of eats and treats.
The teatime spread included chocolate muffins, muffins with cheese, jam and cream and delectable banana bread." I have not had banana bread in some time, so it was a huge treat. Good is just not enough!" said Ken.
But, the guests had to take it slowly with the muffins as next on the menu was a traditional braai done to perfection by Chrissie and her husband, Riel.
During the day, and in-between all the culinary stops, the tour group managed to fit in the many well-known sites, including the beautiful NG church, but Ken says the visit to Auntie Evelyn’s restaurant in her own home touched everyone's heart.
Against many odds Auntie Evelyn managed to elevate herself to a position in life that most would consider impossible. Carving out a good life for herself, she also created employment in the struggling community. "When I say employment, I mean money from meals sold is very carefully divided in order to pay her helpers, buy food and to still give something to children," explains Ken.
Auntie Evelyn is well known for serving traditional meals to South African and international tourists while regaling them with stories from her life and town. She also offers overnight accommodation so that visitors can experience a stay in the heart of the township.
The guests enjoyed eating in the rustic home, made extra cosy by the crackle of the logs in the fire place.
"There is no question that an outing like this lifts the soul of those who can not just get up and go. Our fathers, mothers, grandmothers and grandfathers are wise and we must treasure their experience and wisdom. Remember to spoil them!" urges Ken.
