GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - Nine sentences were handed down in the Graaff-Reinet magistrate’s court last week, including two for rape, and one for sexual assault.
The first rape accused was given a suspended sentence of four years imprisonment, suspended for five years. The second case ended with an eight year sentence, of which four years are suspended for five years. In the sexual assault case, the sentence was also four years’ imprisonment, suspended for five years.
One person was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for housebreaking and theft.
For possession of dagga, a fine of R5 000 or five months’ imprisonment, suspended for five years, was handed down.
Possession of stolen property led to a fine of R1 500 or three months imprisonment, suspended for five years.
For contravention of a protection order, the sentence was three months’ imprisonment, as well as being declared unfit to possess a firearm.
A conviction for assault GBH resulted in a sentence of three years’ imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years.
The final conviction, for robbery with a weapon other than a firearm, led to a sentence of 18 months’ imprisonment, suspended for five years.
