NIEU-BETHESDA NEWS - Around 43 animals from Pienaarsig were sterilised during a successful spayathon held in Nieu-Bethesda on Monday 9 November and Tuesday 10 November.
Five cats and 38 dogs were spayed or neutered.
Erma Voigt of the Camdeboo Sterilisation Initiative (CSI) organised the funding and transport for the animals, and Nieu-Bethesda local Victoria Nance offered her bookshop as a spot for the animals to recover. Nance also went door to door in Pienaarsig beforehand, to raise awareness about the benefits of sterilisation.
"I've been building a relationship with the locals for three years," said Nance. "Unwanted puppies and kittens are a big issue in the area, and low-income households can't take care of them."
Nance added that sterilisation also helps to prevent disease, and allows for much happier and healthier animals in the long run.
According to Nance, there are still many animals in the area that need to be sterilised, but more funding is needed to do so. She encouraged locals to donate towards the cause via the CSI.
Nance also thanked all those involved in making the spayayhon a success.
