KAROO NEWS - While help comes from afar for drought-stricken Graaff-Reinet, Nieu-Bethesda resident Roseline Minnies also does her bit for her neighbouring town that often faces water woes.
Together with friends in the village, Minnies collects empty plastic bottles, which are cleaned and filled with borehole water to donate to the communities of Graaff-Reinet. These bottles are delivered to SANParks in Graaff-Reinet weekly.
"I have family in Graaff-Reinet, and they are often without drinking water," Minnies told the Advertiser. "We still have water that we can drink, imagine how they must feel."
Minnies started the project four weeks ago and said that the response has been overwhelming. "People are so excited to receive water, and Nieu-Bethesda locals are happy to donate bottles because they also know of people in Graaff-Reinet without water."
Last week, over 300 litres of water was delivered, but often Minnies manages to collect up to 400 litres.
"This kindness goes a long way to assist those in need and illustrates the name of Bethesda (healing waters from the baths of Bethesda in the Bible)," a local who witnessed Minnies' work said.
