KAROO NEWS - Graaff-Reinet welcomes back one of its own, Nicky de Bruyn, who was appointed as the district director for the Sarah Baartman District in the Department of Education in May.
This marks a homecoming for De Bruyn, whose remarkable journey in education leadership has made him a trusted and respected figure in education.
Born and raised in Beaufort West, he moved to Graaff-Reinet in 2009, making it his home. His educational journey started at the Southern Cape Teachers College from 1986 to 1988, and he continued his studies at Western Cape Education, accredited by the University of the Western Cape.
He was first appointed as the chief educator for the Department of Education in 2009. From the outset, it was evident that he possessed a deep passion for education and a vision for transformative change. His journey continued to ascend when, in January 2012, he assumed the role of acting director of the then Graaff-Reinet District. In April 2017, his journey took him to the Sarah Baartman District, where he stepped into the role of acting director till November 2018.
December 2018 marked a new chapter in De Bruyn's career as he was permanently appointed as the director for the Chris Hani West District, with his office based in Queenstown. Now, in a much-celebrated return, De Bruyn is back in Graaff-Reinet.
Throughout his career, he has pursued numerous educational courses, showcasing his commitment to lifelong learning.
When asked about his vision for the Sarah Baartman District, De Bruyn articulated a clear goal: "A stable institution for learners to excel, culminating in improved results." His vision extends to being a driving force to eliminate underperformance. He emphasised, "Our slogan for the Sarah Baartman District is 'Declaring war against underperformance'.
His return represents not just a homecoming but also a beacon of hope for educational excellence in the Sarah Baartman District.
