GRAAFF-REINET NEWS - For the first time, a brown hyena has been spotted in the Camdeboo National Park outside Graaff-Reinet.
According to a statement by South African National Parks (SANparks), camera traps recently revealed the first photographic evidence of the nocturnal animal, which was captured on 2 April at 21:11 and again on 10 April at 02:13.
The brown hyena, or parahyaena brunnea, is a near-threatened species. Although they have been seen near Mountain Zebra National Park near Cradock, the appearance is a first for the Camdeboo.
"The photographic evidence has those knowledgeable in the field reeling with excitement," said Fayroush Ludick, regional manager of communications, on behalf of SANparks.
